A Gentle Run-Walk Plan for Kids Who Don't Feel Sporty
Most running advice is aimed at keen young runners. This guide is for children who find running hard, feel self-conscious, or simply haven't found they enjoy it yet.
Why run-walk works
Mixing short jogs with walking breaks means your child never feels like they've "failed" by stopping. Walking is part of the plan, not a sign of giving up.
A simple way to start
Week 1: jog for 30 seconds, walk for 90 seconds, repeat 6 times.
Each week, add a little jogging and take away a little walking — for example 1 minute jog, 1 minute walk.
Two short sessions a week is plenty. Go at your child's pace and repeat a week if it felt tough.
Not ready for running yet?
Energy Boost offers 2–5 minute movement missions — star jumps, animal moves, dancing — to build fitness at home with no running required.
Tips for parents
Praise effort, not times. Run together if you can. Let your child choose a runner character in Mini Pacers and collect coins for every session they finish — small rewards keep motivation going.
When they're ready, the Easy level of our 2km plans is the next step.
